I am currently reading Leviathan - and taking a suitably leviathan-like length of time over it. I don't think I have read a book for a long time that has so much information packed into every single page. But don't think 'I'm not a fan of the whale - this book is not for me' because it is a lovely lovely book and not really about whales at all - except it is totally about whales and I'm not sure how Philip Hoare has managed to write a book that isn't about something that it is about. But he has. Sad undertones most of the time but never morbid, a surprising amount of rather naughty sex, beautiful to hold and to look at - which is an important factor in any book you are going to spend a long time with. highly recommended
